Dr. Smith is an assistant professor in the department of general practice at VCU School of Dentistry. A Columbia, SC native, he received his undergraduate degree in biology from Hampton University, his Doctorate of Dental Surgery degree from the University Of Michigan School Of Dentistry and his Master of Divinity degree from Duke Divinity School. Dr. Smith has practiced general dentistry for nearly a decade and has both community health and private practice experience. He serves both as a pre-clinical and clinical instructor at the School of Dentistry, as well the director of ethics curriculum. Dr. Smith maintains a private practice within the VCU Dental Care Faculty Practice and is an active member of many dental organizations including the American Dental Association, National Dental Association, American Dental Education Association and the American Society for Dental Ethics. His research interests include dental ethics, public health dentistry, oral health disparities and cultural competency. Dr. Smith is also an ordained minister having served in various pastoral roles and completed Clinical Pastoral Education at Duke University Medical Center. He, his wife Heather and daughter Savannah live in Richmond’s Northside and are a part of the team at Hill City Church of Richmond.
